Will AI Search Kill Your Website Traffic? What Google's AI Overviews Mean for Small Business
March 3, 2026 · 5 min read
Google's AI Overviews — the AI-generated summary that now appears above the normal search results — have been tracked going from appearing on about a third of searches to roughly 48% in under a year. That's a real shift, and it's a fair thing to be asking about if you run a small business website. Here's what it actually means, without the panic.
Where the traffic drop is real
The sites losing meaningful traffic — reported drops in the 20-40% range — are mostly ones built around purely informational content: broad how-to articles, general explainer blog posts, the kind of query an AI summary can fully answer without anyone needing to click through. If the entire value of a page was answering a general question, an AI Overview can now do that instead of sending the click.

Why a local business isn't the same case
Local and transactional searches — "plumber near me," "book a haircut in [city]," anything with clear commercial intent tied to a specific business — are far less replaceable by a summary, because the answer isn't a fact, it's a business you need to actually contact or visit. AI Overviews can't book your appointment or answer your phone; they can point toward businesses, which is exactly why being well-structured, locally consistent, and clearly described (see our posts on NAP consistency and Google Business Profile) still matters — arguably more, since being the business an AI answer engine chooses to surface is now part of the game.
What actually still matters
- Clear, structured content that directly answers specific questions (this is exactly why we use FAQ sections and structured data across the site)
- Consistent local information across your site and listings
- Being the kind of specific, well-described business an AI system can confidently point someone toward
